Big Jim Larkin – Hero or Wrecker

Much has been written about 'Big Jim' Larkin but, remarkably, this is the first full-length biography. Through the research of leading labour historian Emmet O'Connor, Larkin - labour leader and agitator - is thoroughly evaluated. O'Connor goes beyond the public figure of heroism to explore the hidden side of a very private person who hated people knowing his business and kept his ambitions and personal demons behind a veil of silence.

Managing Workplace Conflict:
Alternative Dispute Resolution in Ireland

This book is the first systematic study of the genesis, operation and outcomes of ADR in Ireland. ADR innovations are examined in the context of long-run changes in the pattern of conflict in the workplace and against the background of commercial and regulatory developments bearing on organizations. The book draws on the views and experiences of HR managers, union officials, mediators and facilitators charged with handling conflict in the workplace and presents a series of detailed case studies of ADR innovations in major private and public sector organisations. Managing Workplace Conflict is a seminal textbook and an indispensable resource for students and professionals working in the growing field.

Grandpa the Sniper
The Remarkable Story of a 1916 Volunteer

It's April, 1916. Dublin GAA footballer Frank Shouldice has just won the Croke Cup. It's a big achievement for the up and coming star, but he has other things on his mind. Two weeks after the final whistle he's on a rooftop in North King Street with a rifle in his hand. His cheekbone is grazed by a bullet smashing into the wall behind him and, according to a confidential military file, Frank Shouldice is killed in action. Except he's very much alive. His brother Jack commands the barricaded street below. In some of the heaviest fighting of the Easter Rising the South Staffordshire Regiment can't budge a pocket of Irish Volunteers defiantly holding out. Desperate to get the upper hand, the South Staffs storm the barricades after dawn. Through the sights of a borrowed pair of binoculars, Frank takes aim from the Jameson malthouse high above. The street is soon littered with casualties and the British troops are forced to withdraw. Pearse's surrender begins the next chapter of this extraordinary story.

The Children of the Rising

Joe Duffy's 'Children of the Rising' is the first ever account of the young lives violently lost during the week of the 1916 Rising: long-forgotten and never commemorated, until now. Boys, girls, rich, poor, Catholic, Protestant – no child was guaranteed immunity from the bullet and bomb that week, in a place where teeming tenement life existed side by side with immense wealth.

Hallelejah
The story of a musical genius and the city that brought his masterpiece to life

Jonathan Bardon
Jonathan Bardon
18 November, 1741. George Frideric Handel, one of the world’s greatest composers, arrives in Dublin – the second city of the Empire – to prepare his masterpiece, Messiah, for its maiden performance the following spring…

Bringing to life an unforgettable cast of characters, Hallelujah provides a panoramic view of a city in flux – at once struggling to contain the chaos unleashed by the catastrophic famine of the preceding year while striving to become a vibrant centre of European culture and commerce.

1916 The Mornings After

Best-selling historian Tim Pat Coogan offers a strongly personal perspective on the Irish century that followed the Rising - charting a flawed history that is marked as much by complacency, corruption and institutional and clerical abuse, as it is by the sacrifices and nation-building achievements of the Republic's founding fathers.

SIPTU hillwalkers make donation to Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue

SIPTU hillwalkers at the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue base near Laragh, County Wicklow, on Sunday, 13th December, during the presentation of a cheque for €1500 to representatives of Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team. The donation contributes to offsetting the significant cost of the search and rescue service which the Team provides on a volunteer basis in the Wicklow mountains area. One third of the Mountain Rescue Team's costs are met by Government grant. The remaining two thirds depend on their own fund raising events and donations. The service is provided at no cost to hill walkers or any citizen who may have reason to call on their help. The cheque was presented by Noel Dowling to the Team's Callout Officer, Diarmaid Scully.

The Irish Citizen Army

Ann Matthews
The Irish Citizen Army was originally established as a defence corps during the 1913 Lockout, but under the leadership of James Connolly its aims became more Republican and the IRB, fearing Connolly would pre-empt their plans for the Easter Rising, convinced him to join his force with the Irish Volunteers. During the Rising the ICA was active in three garrisons and the book describes for the first time in depth its involvement at St Stephen's Green and the Royal College of Surgeons, at City Hall and its environs and, using the first-hand account of journalist J.J. O'Leary who was on the scene, in the battle around the GPO.

Lockout – Dublin 1913

Padraig Yeates
At 9.40 a.m. on Tuesday, 26th August 1913 the trams stopped running in Dublin. Striking conductors and drivers, members of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, abandoned their vehicles. They had refused a demand from their employer, William Martin Murphy of the Dublin United Transport Company, to forswear union membership or face dismissal. The company then locked them out. Within a month, the charismatic union leader, James Larkin, had called out thousands of workers across the city in sympathetic action. This titanic struggle was played out in the city with the worst slums and the greatest poverty of any capital in northern Europe. By January 1914 the union had lost the battle, lacking the resources for a long campaign. The labour movement lost influence in the revolutionary events of the following years. But in the long run, it won the war; 1913 meant that there was no going back to the horrors of pre-Larkin Dublin.

A City in Civil War
In the concluding volume of Pádraig Yeates’ critically acclaimed ‘Dublin at War’ trilogy, the author turns his attention to the Civil War.

The Truce that heralded the end of the War of Independence in July 1921 proved no more than a prelude to renewed conflict on the capital’s streets as many of the men who worked for Michael Collins in the fight against the British now turned their skills with deadly effect on former comrades.

For some Dubliners, including many southern Unionists, British ex-servicemen and anti-Treaty republicans, the city became a hostile environment with the City Council and Dublin Metropolitan Police abolished by the new Free State.

Handbook of the Irish Revival
A set of writings that reflect the intensity of the cultural debate from 1891 to 1922 featuring essays, articles and letters by world famous figures such as James Joyce, Maud Gonne and J.M. Synge.

Declan Kiberd & P.J. Mathews
Declan Kiberd & P.J. Mathews

The Irish Revival of 1891 to 1922 was an extraordinary era of literary achievement and political debate in Ireland. The artists, thinkers and political activists of the day exchanged ideas and opinions about what Ireland was and could become. Yet much of this discourse remains out of print, some of these voices almost forgotten.

Handbook of the Irish Revival provides for the first time, in an accessible single volume, a set of writings that reflects the intensity of the cultural debate of the time. Essays, articles and letters by world famous figures such as James Joyce, Maud Gonne and J.M. Synge are published alongside less well-known figures, Mary Colum, John Eglinton and Helena Molony among them.

Bitter Freedom, Ireland in a Revolutionary World, 1918-1923

The Irish Revolution - the war between the British authorities and the newly-formed IRA - was the first successful revolt anywhere against the British Empire. This is a vividly-written, compelling narrative placing events in Ireland in the wider context of a world in turmoil after the ending of a global war: one that saw the collapse of empires and the rise of fascist Italy and communist Russia. Walsh shows how developments in Europe and America had a profound effect on Ireland, influencing the attitudes and expectations of combatants and civilians.
