Government targets lone parents and people with disabilities
 |
"The consequences of this decision
would be to effectively deny lone parents and people with disabilities the
opportunity to seek training, education and to improve their lives. It would
also have a major impact on community projects and services.
CE is the backbone of the Community
Sector employing 20,000 people. The removal of welfare entitlements will have a
major impact on staffing levels and the sustainability of projects.
In particular, Community Childcare
will be severely impacted as 25% of staff are CE workers, with a high
proportion dependent on welfare allowances.
The loss of skilled CE workers will
inevitably have severe consequences for community services and programmes.
SIPTU members have begun a campaign
to challenge these proposals and have been lobbying TDs to highlight the
issues.
A formal campaign launch will be
held on Monday, 20th September in Liberty Hall in conjunction with
disability and one parent family organisations including OPEN."
